The Artist:
Max Walter Svanberg was a visionary Swedish painter, illustrator, and surrealist known for his fantastical, often erotic imagery blending the human figure with flora, fauna, and myth. Born in Malmö in 1912, he was a founding member of the Imaginisterna group and was invited to join the Paris Surrealists by André Breton in the 1950s.
His art merges Nordic symbolism with dreamlike surrealism, often centered around hybrid creatures and metaphysical landscapes. Svanberg received the prestigious Prince Eugen Medal in 1965 and remains a celebrated figure in 20th-century Scandinavian art.
